1 in order to do sth so that something can happen, or so that someone can do something 为了做某事; 以便做某事:
Plants need light in order to live. 植物需要光照才能存活。
She had the operation in order to save her eyesight. 为了保住视力她动了手术。
2 [C,U] the way that several things are arranged, and which is first, which is second etc 顺序,次序:
Can you keep the pictures in the same order? 你能把照片按原来的顺序放好吗?
The names were written in alphabetical order. (=with 'a' first, then 'b' etc) 这些人名按字母顺序排列。
3 [C] when a customer asks for a particular kind of food or drink in a restaurant 点菜:

The school has just put in an order for 10 new computers. 学校刚订购了十台新电脑。

6 out of order
a) if a machine is out of order, it has stopped working 〔机器〕出故障的,失灵的:
The photocopier is out of order again. 影印机又坏了。
b) not arranged in the right order 次序紊乱的,不按顺序的:
Don't let the files get out of order. 不要把文件弄乱了。
7 in order
a) legally or officially correct 合法的; 合乎程序[规则]的:
Your passport seems to be in order. 你的护照似乎有效。
b) arranged in the right order 排列有序的,顺序正确的:
Are all the slides in order? 所有幻灯片都按顺序排列吗?
8 [U] when people obey laws or rules, and do not cause trouble 治安; 秩序:
Police are working hard to maintain law and order. 警方在努力维持法纪。
9 [singular 单数,U] the situation that exists in a country or area at a particular time 〔一国或一地区在特定时期的〕社会秩序:
a new world order 世界新秩序
