1 especially spoken used in questions to ask for information about something 【尤口】 什么〔用于疑问句〕:

2 used to talk about the things that someone asks, that someone is sure or not sure about etc 什么,…的东西〔用于谈论某人所问的事情、某人肯定或不肯定的事物等〕:
I'm not sure what you can do. 我不知道你能做什么。
She asked them what they wanted for lunch. 她问他们午餐想吃点什么。
Father showed us what he'd made. 爸爸把自己做的东西给我们看。
3 used to say which things someone does, says, thinks etc 表示某人做的[说的,想的]事:
I told him what to do. 我告诉他要做些什么事。
4 used at the beginning of a sentence to emphasize what you are saying, especially when you are very surprised, excited, annoyed etc 真是,多么,何等〔用于句子的开头以加强语气,尤用于吃惊、激动、生气时〕:
What an idiot! 真是个白痴!
What a nice day! 多好的天气!
5 spoken informal used when you have not heard something that someone said. This use is often considered slightly rude. 【口,非正式】 什么〔用于表示没听清楚别人的话,一般认为这样说较粗鲁〕:
"Do you want a fried egg?" "What?" “你要吃个煎鸡蛋吗?”“什么?”
6 used to ask what someone wants when they call your name 什么事〔用于回应别人的呼唤〕:
"Anita?" "What?" "Can you come here for a minute?" “安妮塔?”“什么事?”“你能过来一下吗?”
7 what's up?/what's happening? informal, especially AmE used to say hello to someone you know well 【非正式,尤美】 你好吗?/近来好吗?〔用于招呼熟人〕:
"Hey Chris! What's up?" “嗨,克理斯!你好吗?”
8 what's up (with sb/sth) used to ask what is wrong with someone or something (某人/某物)出什么事了,怎么了:
What's up with Denise? 丹妮丝怎么啦?
9 what if...? spoken 【口】
a) used to talk about something that might happen, especially something bad or frightening 如果…怎么办?:
What if he got lost? 他迷了路怎么办?
b) used to make a suggestion 如果…怎么样?〔用于提出建议〕:
What if I took you there in my car? 我开车送你去那里如何?
10 what with spoken used when you are giving the reasons for something, especially a bad situation 【口】 因为,由于:
I can't afford to run a car, what with petrol, insurance and everything. 我养不起汽车,因为要支付汽油费、保险费等等。
11 what's more spoken used to add another thing to what you have just said, especially something interesting or surprising 【口】 而且,此外〔尤用于加上有趣或使人惊讶的一点〕
12 have what it takes to have the ability or courage to do something 具备条件[勇气]〔做某事〕:
Whitman doesn't have what it takes to do the job. 惠特曼不具备做这份工作的条件。

USAGE NOTE 用法说明: what
When you are talking to someone and you do not understand what they say or you do not hear them clearly, it is polite to say 当你和别人讲话时不懂别人的意思或者没有听清楚时,礼貌的说法是 "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you." “抱歉,我没听清楚。” or 或者说 "I'm sorry, I don't understand." “对不起,我没能听懂。” It is not polite to just say "What?" 单说“什么?”是不礼貌的。
