1 [T] to have clothes, shoes, glasses, jewellery etc on your body 穿,戴:
Dad was wearing his best suit. 爸爸穿上他最好的套装。
She doesn't usually wear a lot of make-up. 她通常不施浓妆。
2 [T] to have your hair in a particular style 留,蓄〔头发〕:
Fay wore her hair in a bun. 费伊把自己的头发盘成个髻。
3 [T] to have a particular expression on your face 面露〔某种表情〕:
He came out wearing a big grin on his face. 他出来时面上挂着兴高采烈的笑容。
4 [I,T] to become thin or damaged because of being held or rubbed a lot 磨薄,磨损:
The carpet was starting to wear at the edges. 这块地毯四边已磨损了。
wear a hole in sth (=make a hole in it by using it, rubbing it etc) 某物已磨出破洞
5 wear well/badly to stay/not stay in good condition after being used 耐用/不耐用
6 wear thin if an excuse, joke etc is wearing thin, it has been used so often that it is no longer believable, funny, or effective 〔借口、玩笑等〕变陈腐,老掉牙:
That joke is wearing a bit thin. 那笑话听起来已不怎么好笑了。
wear sth ↔ away
if something wears away or is worn away, it gradually becomes thinner and disappears because it has been rubbed or used a lot (使)磨损; (使)磨掉:
rocks worn away by the sea 被海浪冲蚀的岩石
wear down
1 [T wear sb ↔ down] to make someone weaker or less determined, especially by attacking them or trying to persuade them 消耗〔某人的〕体力; 削弱〔某人的〕决心:
Lewis gradually wore down his opponent and knocked him out in the eighth round. 刘易斯逐渐削弱对手,在第八回合把他击倒了。
2 [I,T wear sth ↔ down] if you wear something down or it wears down, it becomes flatter or smaller because it has been rubbed or used a lot 使〔某物〕磨薄[变小]:
My shoes have worn down at the heel. 我这双鞋的后跟已磨平了。
wear off
if a feeling or the effect of something wears off, it gradually stops 〔感觉或效果〕逐渐消失:
The drug was starting to wear off. 药效开始慢慢消失。
wear on
as the day/evening etc wore on used to say that something happened gradually during a particular day, evening etc 随着某日/夜等的时间缓慢过去:
It became hotter as the day wore on. 长日漫漫,气温越来越高。
wear out
1 [I,T wear sth ↔ out] if something wears out, or you wear it out, it becomes damaged and useless because it has been used so much 磨坏,磨损:
After only a month Terry had worn out the soles of his shoes, and we had to buy some new ones. 仅仅一个月后特里就把鞋跟磨坏了,我们只好再去买双新的。
2 [T wear sb ↔ out] to make someone feel very tired 使〔某人〕精疲力竭:
The kids are wearing me out. 这些小孩让我精疲力尽。
