1 towards a higher position or in a higher position 向上地; 在高处:
They began walking up the hill. 他们开始步行上山。
Can you move the picture up a little higher? 把画再挂高一点,好吗?
"Where's Dave?" "He's up in his room." (=in a higher part of the building where you are now) “戴夫在哪里?”“他在楼上自己的房间里。”
2 if you get up or stand up, you move into an upright position 起来〔趋向于直立姿势〕:
They all stood up to sing. 他们都站起来唱歌。
3 used to say that something increases, becomes louder, hotter etc 增大,增强:
Can you turn up the TV? 把电视机开大声点,好吗?
4 used to emphasize that someone does something completely or finishes all of something …完,…光,…尽〔用于强调〕:
He's eaten up all his food. 他把自己那份饭菜全都吃光了。
They soon used up all their money. 他们很快便花完了所有的钱。
5 not in bed 起床,未睡:
Are you still up? 你还没睡吗?
They stayed up all night to watch the game. 他们为观看比赛整晚都没睡觉。
6 if the amount of something is up, it has increased 〔数量〕上涨:
Profits were up by 4% this year. 今年利润增长了 4%。
7 spoken if a period of time is up, it has finished 【口】 〔时间〕耗尽的
8 in or towards the north 在北部; 向北方:
His relatives all live up in Scotland. 他的亲戚都住在(英国)北部的苏格兰。
9 up the street/road/river etc further along the street, road etc 在[向]街/路/河流等的较远处:
She lives just up the street. 她就住在街的那一头。
10 up to
a) used to say how large a number or amount can be 〔数目或数量〕多达; 至多:
Up to 10 people are allowed in the elevator at one time. 电梯一次最多可乘十人。
b) as good as a particular level or standard 达到〔一定水平或标准〕:
The band's latest record isn't up to their usual high standard. 该乐队的最新专辑没有达到他们一向的高水准。
11 walk/go/come etc up to to walk etc towards someone or something until you are next to them 走到/来到…的面前:
A man came up to me and asked for a light. 一个男人走到我面前问我借个火。
12 up to/up until until a particular date or time 直到〔某一日期或时间〕:
The offer is valid up to December 15. 这项优惠在 12 月 15 日之前有效。
13 it's up to sb spoken used to say that someone should decide about something 【口】 由某人作主,取决于某人:
"Do you think I should get the dress?" "It's up to you." “你觉得我该买那条裙子吗?”“你自己决定吧。”
14 be/feel up to sth to feel healthy enough or strong enough to do something 感觉身体足以做某事:
Do you feel up to a walk today? 你感觉今天去散步身体还可以吗?
15 be up to something to be doing something secretly, especially something that you should not do 秘密干某事〔尤指不应做的事〕:
He keeps looking behind him. I'm sure he's up to something. 他老是往自己的身后看,我敢肯定他在捣鬼。
16 be up against sth to have to compete against a very difficult opponent, or deal with a very difficult situation 面临〔强大的对手〕; 应付〔困境〕:
We're up against some of the biggest companies in the world. 我们面对的是世界上最大的几家公司。
17 up for sale/discussion etc being sold, discussed etc 出售/讨论中:
Their house is up for sale. 他们的房子现供出售。
18 be up and running if something is up and running, it is working 运作中:
The system should be up and running early next year. 这套系统明年初应该可以投入使用。
