1 the past tense of CAN ☆ CAN 的过去式:
Could you understand what he was saying? 你能听懂他在说什么吗?
She said she couldn't find it. 她说她无法找到那东西。
2 used to say that something is possible or may be true 〔表示可能性〕:
Most accidents in the home could easily be prevented. 大多数家庭事故可以轻易避免。
You could be right, I suppose. 我想你可能是对的。
How could anyone be so cruel? (=how is it possible?) 怎么会有人如此残忍?
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? 如果你可以住在世界上任何地方,你会住在哪儿?
could have (=used to say that something might have happened, especially when it did not happen) 〔过去〕本来可以; 本来可能; 本来会〔尤用于实际并未发生的情况下〕: She could have been killed. 她险些没命。
3 could you/could I etc spoken used to politely ask someone to do something, or ask permission to do something 【口】 您能/我能等…吗〔用于有礼貌地请求某人做某事或请求允许做某事〕:
Could I ask you a couple of questions? 我能问您几个问题吗?
Could you open the window? 您能把窗打开吗?
4 used to suggest doing something 〔用于建议做某事〕:
You could try calling his office. 你可以试试打电话到他的办公室。
could always We could always stop and ask directions. 我们可以不时停下来问路。
5 I could spoken used to say that you feel angry, sad, hungry etc enough to do something 【口】 我〔气得、沮丧得、饿得等〕会〔做某事〕:
I could have killed him when he said that! 当他说那句话时,我气得差点杀了他!
